The variety belongs to the mid-late maturity group. The name comes from the German word for scarlet fever, due to the appearance of reddish and purple spots on the berries when ripening in the sun. The clusters of the variety are sometimes compared to a ram's head, which is reflected in a number of folk synonyms.

The variety is considered relatively undemanding and grows well in poor soils, although its yield can be unstable due to flowering characteristics. It is characterized by moderate resistance to major grapevine diseases. Within the framework of clonal selection, the best samples of the variety were selected for the restoration and standardization of planting material.
