The name translates as "late Burgunder," which reflects its origin from Burgundy and its ripening period. The variety is the primary red grape in Germany intended for creating high-quality wines.
The plant is demanding regarding growing conditions, preferring a moderately warm climate and limestone soils, although it is successfully cultivated on slate, sandy, and loess soils. The variety is considered difficult to grow and requires meticulous care.
Wines from this variety possess a velvety structure, moderate tannins, and acidity. The aroma is dominated by notes of cherry, raspberry, strawberry, blackberry, and bitter almond; when aged in oak, shades of vanilla, coffee, spices, and earth may appear.
