The variety is of French origin from the Bordeaux region and is one of the parents of the Cabernet Sauvignon variety. The purpose of the variety is exclusively for winemaking: it is used for the production of a wide range of white wines, including elite dessert wines.
Morphologically, the variety is characterized by a densely pubescent greenish-white tip of the young shoot with pink leaf margins and reddish-brown ripened shoots. The flowers are hermaphroditic, and the variety has high sensitivity to terroir conditions and soils.
The variety is considered susceptible to a complex of diseases, including downy mildew, powdery mildew, black rot, and gray rot. Products made from this variety are distinguished by freshness and pronounced acidity, with aromas ranging from gooseberry and currant leaf in cool climates to tropical fruits in hot conditions.
