The variety is vigorous, with good vine maturation. Leaves are medium-sized, five-lobed, dark green, deeply dissected, with slight cobwebby pubescence on the underside. Clusters are medium-sized, dense, conical in shape. Berries are round or oval, dark blue, covered with thick skin.
The variety is considered capricious, with unstable yields due to a tendency toward flower/ovary drop. It is sensitive to late spring frosts and does not tolerate stony soils and water stagnation due to the risk of chlorosis. Resistance to fungal diseases corresponds to the average indicators of European varieties.
Wines from this variety have a saturated ruby color, dense structure, soft tannins, and balanced acidity. The bouquet is dominated by notes of black cherry, wild berries, raspberry, spices, and chocolate. The variety is a parent for the Zweigelt and André varieties.
