The variety is the result of a natural cross between the Traminer and Österreichisch Weiß varieties. The leaf is medium-sized, round, 3- or 5-lobed, with a wavy surface. Bunches are medium, cylindrical, often compact, with round, yellow-green, medium-sized berries.

The plant has good vigor, but is sensitive to winter frosts and fungal diseases such as downy mildew, powdery mildew, and Botrytis. The variety is known for stable yields, although grape growers often limit yields to maintain wine quality.

Sylvaner is used exclusively as a wine variety for the production of varietal wines and blends. The resulting wines are characterized by freshness, minerality, and subtle acidity, with dominant notes of green apple, pear, citrus, and herbal undertones.
