The variety is native to the northeastern part of Spain and is considered quite undemanding and high-yielding. The vines are characterized by moderate vigor, late budburst, and late maturity. The bunches are large, and the berries are medium-sized with thick skin.

Viura adapts well to dry and hot climates, but it is sensitive to excessive humidity and drought. The variety is susceptible to grey mold and requires protection against downy mildew. Wines made from this grape are characterized by balanced acidity and are often used in blends.

Depending on the harvest time and winemaking technology, the flavor and aromatic characteristics of the wines vary from fresh floral and fruity notes when harvested early to denser nutty and honeyed tones when harvested late and aged in barrels.
