The variety originates from modern-day Slovenia, but was historically widespread in Austria and was long erroneously believed to be Portuguese. The name Vöslauer became associated with the variety due to its popularity on estates in Bad Vöslau and its use in local sparkling wine production.
The plant exhibits vigorous growth and early ripening. Clusters are medium-sized and often winged; berries are blue-black with thin skin. The variety is sensitive to frost and prone to fungal diseases such as downy mildew, powdery mildew, and botrytis, requiring complex maintenance.
This variety is a wine grape and is used to produce light red and rosé wines with low tannin and acid content. In some contexts, the name Vöslauer may also refer to wines produced in the Bad Vöslau region or to a brand of mineral water.
