The variety is ancient; its exact origin and parentage currently remain unknown. Genetic studies have refuted hypotheses regarding a relationship between the variety and Cabernet Sauvignon. The crop is not a color mutation of the white variety Volitsa Aspri, despite the similarity of the names.

The plant is classified as a wine variety and is cultivated in small quantities primarily in the Peloponnese region in Greece. Due to the rarity and limited study of the variety, exact morphological characteristics and data on disease resistance are absent from open sources.
