Cherry anthracnose

Prunus avium (L.) L.

A fungal disease of cherries caused by a complex of Colletotrichum species. It manifests primarily during the fruit ripening period as sunken necrotic spots, leading to rot and mummification.

The primary pathogens of cherry anthracnose are the fungi Colletotrichum acutatum, Colletotrichum fructicola, Colletotrichum aenigma, and a number of other species. The disease is characterized by a latent infection on green fruit and mass infestation during the ripening phase, when brown sunken necrotic lesions 1–2 cm in diameter form on the skin.

The infection also affects leaves and branches, causing the formation of cankers that hinder tissue nutrient transport. Sources of pathogen survival in the orchard include plant debris and generative buds. Specific resistance genes to this disease in cherries have not yet been identified.
