Ascochyta blight of pea

Pisum sativum L.

A complex of pea diseases caused by three fungal species: Ascochyta pisi, Ascochyta pinodes, and Ascochyta pinodella, manifesting as leaf spots and rots.

In the reference 114 varieties crop Pea, where this is mentioned in the description.

The disease is caused by three primary pathogens: Ascochyta pisi, responsible for leaf and pod spot; Ascochyta pinodes (teleomorph Mycosphaerella pinodes), which causes blight; and Ascochyta pinodella (Phoma medicaginis var. pinodella), which frequently affects roots and the root collar. The development of these pathogens leads to reduced germination, crop thinning, and premature senescence of vegetative organs.

Symptoms include the appearance of circular light-brown spots with a dark margin in the case of Ascochyta pisi infection, or coalescing dark-brown spots and deep lesions on stems caused by Ascochyta pinodes. The formation of punctate fungal fruiting bodies, known as pycnidia, is characteristic in the center of the affected areas. Resistance in pea cultivars is generally assessed as field resistance, with no detailed standard R-gene systems established for managing the pathogen.
