Avena nuda L.
The fungi Ustilago avenae and Ustilago kolleri infect naked oats, causing loose and covered smut. Due to the absence of a dense protective hull on the caryopsis, this crop exhibits increased susceptibility to diseases compared to hulled oats.

Symptoms appear during the heading stage. In loose smut, all parts of the spikelets are destroyed and replaced by a black-olive powdery mass of spores, leaving only the rachis of the panicle. In covered smut, the infected panicles appear more compact, and teliospores are retained within the glumes longer, not dispersing until harvest.
Genetic control of resistance is provided by dominant genes, among which U-22, U-24, and U-26 are identified as responsible for complex resistance to both types of the disease. Identification of resistant forms is carried out by screening collections on artificial infectious backgrounds using differential varieties.
