The causative agent of the disease is the ascomycete fungus Taphrina deformans, which infects the plant in the early spring period. Characteristic swellings of pale green, yellow, or bright red color form on leaf blades, followed by the development of a waxy coating and mass leaf drop.

Infection of young shoots leads to their deformation, shortening of internodes, and the formation of leaf rosettes. As the infection progresses, fruits lose their pubescence and become covered with cracks and blisters, while flowers are often deformed and fall off. There are no cultivars immune to the disease; therefore, breeding focuses on selecting genotypes with increased field resistance.
