Apple Moniliosis

A fungal disease of apple trees caused by Monilinia fructigena and Monilinia mali, manifesting as fruit rot and monilial blight of vegetative organs.

The primary pathogen of the disease is the fungus Monilinia fructigena, although infections can also be caused by the highly specialized species Monilinia mali. Unlike stone fruits, where monilial blight is predominant, the fruit rot form is most common in apples.

Fruit infection begins with the appearance of a brown spot that spreads over the entire fruit, leading to softening of the flesh and the formation of concentric circles of sporulation on the surface. Affected fruits often become mummified. The spring form of infection, monilial blight, leads to the sudden wilting and drying of flowers, leaves, and fruit-bearing twigs.

Specific resistance genes to moniliosis in apples have not yet been identified. Resistance in cultivars is considered a complex trait, which is assessed through field variety trials based on the percentage of affected fruit.
