Variety traits
Prunus domestica L.
The ability of Prunus domestica cultivars to withstand the damaging effects of sub-zero temperatures, assessed by the survival of generative buds and tree tissues.
In the reference 19 varieties crop European plum, where this is mentioned in the description.
To evaluate the frost resistance of plums, the field method of visual inspection of trees after winter and the method of artificial freezing in a laboratory are used. The degree of damage to bark, xylem, and bud tissues is expressed in points on a scale from 0 to 5. Genotype resistance is determined by three components: tolerance to early winter frosts, maximum stability in mid-winter, and the ability to maintain protective properties after winter thaws.
Highly resistant plum cultivars are capable of withstanding temperatures from -30 °C to -35 °C in mid-winter while maintaining tissue regeneration capacity. Low frost resistance manifests as damage to generative buds, leading to crop loss, as well as damage to the conducting system, which causes general weakening and premature death of the plantings.
