Tissue necrosis

Alternaria cucumerina, Leptosphaeria maculans, Nectria cinnabarina, Rhacodiella vitis, Pseudomonas syringae, Pseudomonas corrugata, Beet necrotic yellow vein virus, Prunus necrotic ringspot

Necrosis is a pathological process of plant tissue death caused by infectious agents (fungi, bacteria, viruses) or non-infectious environmental factors. It is characterized by localized damage that can lead to the loss of a significant portion of the crop or the plant itself.

Mentioned in descriptions 2 111 varieties reference book.

Necrosis manifests as tissue death, visually expressed as spotting, lesions on fruits and shoots, and the death of bark, cambium, and the vascular system. Cracks may form on affected areas, gummosis can be observed in stone fruit crops, or specific fungal sporulation may appear in the form of tubercles and pustules.

The development of the process depends both on the presence of an infectious source and on environmental conditions, including humidity and sharp temperature fluctuations that cause frost cracks or sunburn. Mechanical damage often serves as an entry point for infection, which persists in plant debris, soil, or planting material.

Varietal resistance is based on anatomical features, such as bark strength, which can limit pathogen penetration, or the plant's ability to rapidly form a protective callus layer around the damaged zone. Resistance evaluation in variety trials is conducted using scales of disease intensity under conditions of artificial or natural infection.

The concept of necrosis resistance in crop production always requires specification of the particular pathogen, as immunity to the pathological process as a whole does not exist. When selecting a variety, one should prioritize documented resistance to pathogen species relevant to the region, as indicated in the originator's data or the state register.
