Potatoes are extremely sensitive to water regime due to their shallow root system. Consistent moisture is critical for tuber formation and the prevention of physiological deformities.

Potato water requirements peak from the budding stage through the end of flowering. During this period, water stress leads to an irreversible decrease in yield. In the early stages of development prior to budding, moisture requirements are minimal, and excessive moisture can negatively affect crop development.
To achieve high yields, soil moisture during the tuberization period should be maintained within the range of 70–90% of field capacity. Sharp fluctuations in soil moisture following dry periods trigger tuber deformation, the formation of secondary growths, hollow hearts, and growth cracks, and also promote the development of storage rots.
