Cultivation

Field cultivation of basil

Ocimum basilicum L.

Growing basil in open ground requires soil warming to +15°C and the use of transplanting methods in regions with short growing seasons to prevent cold-induced mortality.

In the reference 33 varieties crop Basil, where this is mentioned in the description.

For successful cultivation in open ground, a critical parameter is the warming of the soil to a depth of 10 cm to +15°C, as basil is extremely sensitive to low temperatures and late frosts. In central and northern regions, only the transplanting method is preferred; due to the fragility of the root system, cell-tray technologies or non-prick-out cultivation must be used to minimize transplant stress.

Basil crop rotation excludes planting after members of the Lamiaceae family due to the risk of specific pathogen accumulation; the best preceding crops are cucumbers, potatoes, and legumes. Essential oil accumulation reaches its maximum at the onset of flowering, so the harvest schedule is oriented towards this period, and in variety trials, the key parameters are the biochemical composition of the oils, aroma profile, and the rate of reaching technological maturity.
