Growing basil under protected cultivation is the preferred method due to the crop's high thermal requirements and the necessity for strict microclimate control to preserve the quality of essential oils.

For successful basil growth in enclosed spaces, it is necessary to maintain temperatures in the range of +23–25°C, as a decrease to +12°C causes growth to stop, and frosts lead to plant death. An important technological aspect is ensuring a long photoperiod of at least 16 hours and selecting the spectral composition of lighting to increase aroma intensity and yield.

Basil cultivation technology involves the use of multi-tier hydroponic systems or soil substrates with an essential drainage system. The latter is necessary for the prevention of damping-off ('black leg'), to which the crop is extremely sensitive in cases of waterlogging. Managed protected cultivation conditions allow for conveyor-belt production with intensive fertilization after each harvest without the need to observe strict crop rotation.
