Downy mildew of basil

Ocimum basilicum L.

A fungal disease of basil caused by the oomycete Peronospora belbahrii, characterized by the appearance of chlorotic spots on the leaves and the formation of a gray-purple fuzz on their underside.

In the reference 46 varieties crop Basil, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causal agent of the disease is the obligate oomycete Peronospora belbahrii. Primary symptoms appear as chlorotic spots on the upper surface of the leaf blade, while the veins often remain green, creating a characteristic checkered pattern.

On the underside of the leaf, a dense sporulating fuzz of a grayish or purple shade forms in the yellowed areas. As the infection progresses, the spots coalesce, and the affected areas become necrotic, leading to leaf curling and drop.

At present, there is no intraspecific classification of the pathogen into races, and specific resistance genes in basil have not been identified nor have they been assigned international nomenclature. The resistance of breeding lines is assessed as tolerance without a clear association with genetic markers.
