Vigor — Sour Cherry

To objectively assess the vigor of sour cherry (Prunus cerasus), a complex of indicators is used: crown volume, its projection area, and trunk cross-sectional area. When classifying cultivars into low-, medium-, and high-vigor, the consistency of these parameters is taken into account, and their values significantly depend on the rootstock; for example, the use of clonal rootstocks such as VSL-2 allows for a reduction in growth parameters by 30% or more.

The orchard management strategy directly depends on the tree's vigor. Tree-like cultivars can reach a height of 5–10 m, whereas in intensive horticulture, priority is given to low-vigor forms. Vigor control is also achieved through the selection of trunk height and pruning techniques: branch orientation and thinning allow for the regulation of vertical growth and the onset of the fruiting period.
