Potato vigor is assessed using expert scoring scales 45–50 days after emergence or through biometric indicators, including leaf canopy area, number of stems, and sprout length and weight. Modern analysis methods include aerial imaging with NDVI calculation and laboratory Fourier spectroscopy.
High vigor is critical for early varieties, as it allows for faster development of the leaf apparatus, row closure for weed suppression, and accumulation of assimilates. Low vigor often indicates a suboptimal physiological state of the tubers due to temperature fluctuations during storage.
