Vitis vinifera L.
A varietal characteristic that defines the development energy of shoots during the vegetative period. It is evaluated on an OIV scale from 1 to 9 points based on the total vine length.

To assess vigor, instrumental measurements of shoot length from bud burst until growth cessation are used, or a visual estimation method is applied in comparison with reference varieties. According to the OIV classification, varieties are distributed into five categories: from very weak (up to 0.5 m) to very strong (more than 3 m) vigor.
This trait determines the selection of the spacing, training system, and the bud and shoot load of the vine. In vigorous varieties, excessive vegetative mass requires regular canopy management (green operations) to ensure aeration, while insufficient shoot growth reduces cane maturation and winter hardiness.
