The terminal inflorescence of a gladiolus, botanically a rhipidium, is referred to as a spike in floriculture. Its ornamental value is determined by the number of buds, the number of simultaneously open flowers, and the density of placement within the spike.

During variety testing and breeding selection, the gladiolus inflorescence is evaluated based on a complex of morphometric parameters. The spike length in promising vigorous varieties is 70 cm or more. The optimal indicator for the total number of buds in an inflorescence is considered to be the 18–20 range, with an overall variability of 16 to 30 buds.

The most important criteria for aesthetic appeal are inflorescence density and the number of simultaneously open flowers; the ability to keep 8–10 flowers open at the same time is considered a sign of high varietal quality. Flower placement in the spike can vary from alternate and spiral to the most valuable double-row arrangement.

The morphology of the inflorescence is inextricably linked to the economic characteristics of the crop, particularly stem strength. Tall-growing varieties with large, dense inflorescences require increased peduncle strength to prevent lodging and damage to the spike under the weight of open flowers during cutting or exposure to weather conditions.
