Pea Protein Content

Pisum sativum L.

The protein content in pea grain is a critical indicator of its feed and nutritional value, depending on the cultivar's genetics and growing conditions. Average values range from 22–25%, reaching 30% in high-protein cultivars.

In the reference 154 varieties crop Pea, where this is mentioned in the description.

The Kjeldahl method is used to assess pea grain quality, where total nitrogen content is converted to crude protein using a factor of 6.25. Protein content is expressed as a percentage of the dry matter mass.

Protein accumulation in pea grain is negatively correlated with the 1000-seed weight, with late-maturing cultivars often exhibiting higher values. Hot and dry weather conditions during the growing season contribute to an increase in seed protein concentration.

Agrotechnical practices, including the optimization of mineral nutrition and the application of foliar fertilizers during the stem elongation and budding stages, allow for an increase in both the percentage of protein and its total yield per unit area.
