Cultivation
Rhododendron L.
Solitary placement of Rhododendron requires the creation of a specific microenvironment to protect the shallow root system and maintain a particular soil acidity level.
In the reference 13 varieties crop Azalea, where this is mentioned in the description.
In solitary planting, the Rhododendron serves as a visual accent due to its natural spherical crown shape and abundant flowering. Unlike group plantings, a single plant lacks a natural microclimate, so it is placed in dappled shade provided by trees to protect it from drying winds and direct sunlight.
A critical condition for solitary placement is avoiding the planting of other perennials at the base of the shrub, which would compete for resources with the shallow root system. Constant mulching of the tree ring with coniferous needles or bark is mandatory, as it prevents root overheating and maintains the necessary substrate acidity of pH 4.5–5.5.
Given the crop's high moisture requirements and the lack of a group microclimate, a solitary Rhododendron needs regular overhead irrigation during hot periods. When preparing the planting site, the dimensions of the mature plant are taken into account, forming a wide but shallow pit with the soil replaced by a specialized substrate.
