Dry rot

Fusarium

Dry rot (Fusarium rot) is a dangerous disease caused by soil-borne fungi, characterized by tissue shriveling and the formation of cavities filled with mycelium in tubers and fruits, as well as plant wilting.

Mentioned in descriptions 439 varieties reference book.

Dry rot manifests on tubers and fruits as depressed grayish-brown spots, accompanied by skin shriveling and the decay of internal tissues, which become dry, punky, and filled with fluffy mycelium. On growing plants, the disease is detected by localized wilting, leaf yellowing, and darkening of the vascular ring on stem cross-sections, sometimes with the appearance of sporulation in the root zone.

Disease development depends on environmental conditions, favoring temperatures of +17…+25°C and air humidity above 70–80%. Risk factors include mechanical tissue damage during harvesting, the presence of secondary infections, and sharp temperature fluctuations that trigger condensation in storage facilities.

Varietal resistance is genetically determined, but its expression strongly depends on environmental conditions. In variety trials, resistance is assessed through visual evaluation of affected plants in the field or storage, laboratory tests for reactions to fungal metabolites, and under controlled conditions with artificial inoculation.
