Hop tolerance

Humulus lupulus L.

The ability of a hop variety to maintain productivity and raw material quality, including alpha and beta acid content, under conditions of biotic or abiotic stress.

Hop tolerance is assessed as the ability of a variety to withstand the impact of pathogens, such as Verticillium wilt, powdery mildew, and downy mildew, as well as abiotic factors, including heat, drought, and soil salinity. This complex trait determines the economic efficiency of plantations by allowing for a reduction in costs for chemical protection and irrigation.

Field trials on irrigated and non-irrigated plots, as well as gasometric measurements of photosynthesis and transpiration intensity, are used to evaluate tolerance. In breeding practice, a scoring scale from 1 to 9 is used, with the tolerance of a specific variety always determined relative to control or susceptible analogues.
