Variety traits

Plum tolerance

Prunus domestica L.

The ability of a European plum (Prunus domestica) cultivar to maintain productivity and fruit quality when infected with a virus, primarily Plum pox virus (PPV), while remaining a virus carrier.

In the reference 58 varieties crop European plum, where this is mentioned in the description.

Plum tolerance is manifested in the tree's ability to maintain marketable fruit quality and yield despite the presence of the pathogen in plant tissues. Unlike immunity, a tolerant cultivar remains a virus carrier, which makes it a latent reservoir of infection within the agrocenosis.

The trait is evaluated by comparing molecular-genetic PCR analysis data, which confirms the presence of the virus, with results from visual observations of leaf and fruit condition. A cultivar is classified as tolerant if, upon virus detection, external symptoms of deformation are absent and yield parameters remain stable.

The use of tolerant cultivars is of critical economic importance in regions with endemic Plum pox virus, allowing for the maintenance of orchard profitability. However, their cultivation requires consideration of the epiphytotic risk, as outwardly healthy trees serve as a constant source of infection for neighboring, less resistant plantings.
