Tomasa represents a local variety of Castanea sativa formed as a result of long-term selection in the Malaga and Huelva regions. The genetic affiliation of the clone has been confirmed by molecular analysis methods.

The fruits of this variety are distinguished by their large size, approximately 44 nuts per kilogram, and high sugar content. They are classified as 'marrón' type fruits, which makes them in demand for confectionery production and for sale as fresh produce.

The variety is grown under the traditional conditions of Andalusia. Research on the level of infestation by Cydia splendana shows variability in resistance depending on the geographic zone of cultivation.
