The period from emergence to technical maturity is from 60–65 to 80–90 days. The plant forms a leaf rosette about 15 cm high and up to 30 cm in diameter. The variety is cold-hardy, with the intensity of the red leaf coloration increasing during short daylight hours and cool night temperatures.

The heads are dense, weighing from 200 to 450 g. The leaves are dark red with contrasting white veins; their taste is piquant, with a slight bitterness. The produce is used primarily fresh and is also suitable for boiling and stewing.

The plant is suitable for cultivation in both open field and protected cultivation. When cultivating, avoid early sowing in cold soil to prevent premature bolting and maintain a watering regime to prevent waterlogging.
