The variety originated as a limb sport and is practically indistinguishable in its characteristics from the Ray Ruby variety. The tree is evergreen, medium- or vigorous, reaching a height of 5–6 meters and possessing a dense-leaved crown. The plant tolerates high temperatures well, provided there is regular watering.

The fruits belong to the red sweet grapefruit group. The peel is yellow with a characteristic strong reddish blush, and the flesh is distinguished by a deep red hue. The variety is seedless and intended for commercial use. The Henderson variety became the parent of the well-known Flame grapefruit variety.
