A multi-stemmed large shrub with a wide-rounded or spreading crown, reaching 3–6 meters in height. The main ornamental feature is the bright burgundy-red color of the foliage in spring, which may turn green or dark green with a reddish tint by the end of summer.
The fruits are oblong burgundy-brown nuts in a burgundy husk weighing 3–4 grams, which ripen in September to early October. The variety has good winter hardiness and wind resistance, but requires fertile, drained soils and is sensitive to waterlogging and drought.
The plant is used as a specimen plant in landscape design due to its attractive appearance, as well as a nut-bearing crop. Disease resistance is rated as medium.
