The GF 43 rootstock is intended for use in fruit growing for grafting plums, and in some cases peaches or apricots. It is characterized as vigorous, however, in scientific studies it is noted as low-productive in comparison with other rootstocks.

The plant has a tendency to form root suckers. The rootstock is sensitive to drought and exhibits susceptibility to certain diseases, such as the prune chlorotic leaf spot virus, which can lead to incompatibility with the scion.
