The variety is intended for use as a rootstock for sweet cherry and was developed as part of a program to create virus-free planting material. The vigor of trees grafted onto this rootstock corresponds to that of F 12/1, while the plants are characterized by more regular growth.

This rootstock is characterized by a high degree of uniformity of the seedlings and improved resistance to Crown-Gall. The yield and fruit quality of varieties grafted onto Pontaris are comparable to the results of using the F 12/1 rootstock.
