The variety is a folk selection rather than a result of intentional breeding and has a number of regional synonyms, including Božičnica, Kolačara, Pogačar, Pogačnik, Tanjurača, Koturača, and Repica. The name is derived from the word pogača, which refers to a type of traditional bread or cake.

The variety belongs to the group of late-maturing apples, often associated with the Christmas period. It holds cultural, historical, and genetic significance, is preserved in collections as an example of local biodiversity, and is traditionally used for processing and the preparation of various dishes.
