«Pomme d'Or» is not an official standardized variety. In France, this name was historically applied to a number of yellow-fruited apples, such as Reinette dorée or Golden Pippin. There are mentions of an old French utility variety whose fruits have a medium size, a whitish-yellow color with a pinkish-red blush, and white flesh with a tart, slightly sweet taste. The variety is highly susceptible to scab.

In English-speaking regions, this name is used to describe a summer winter-hardy variety, likely originating in Quebec before 1870. Due to the lack of a unified description and certification under this name, horticulture often encompasses various local forms that are unrelated to modern commercial varieties.
