The name is historically established for various regional genetic forms united by high fruit density and firm flesh. Trees of these varieties are described as vigorous, hardy, resistant to frost and diseases, with a spreading crown.

Fruits ripen in late October — November. Due to lack of juiciness and high firmness, they are rarely consumed fresh, more often used for culinary processing, winter storage, or cider production. The name often acts as a synonym for other local varieties, such as Marie-Joseph d'Othée or Roter Stettiner.
