The variety was found by farmer Jesse Hiatt in the state of Iowa, was originally called Hawkeye, and after the acquisition of rights by the Stark Nurseries company, it received the name Delicious. Later, with the appearance of the Golden Delicious variety, the name Red Delicious was established for it.
The tree is medium-sized, reaching a height of 4 to 6 meters depending on the rootstock. At a young age, the crown has an oval or obovate-pyramidal shape, which becomes broadly rounded over the years.
The variety belongs to the group of winter consumption timing and is a dessert type. The fruits possess high keeping quality, which has made them in demand for export. The variety was also widely used in breeding work as a parent form.
