The plant is a small tree or large shrub 3–8 meters high with a spherical or spreading crown. The leaves have a brownish-red or dark purple hue when unfolding, eventually becoming bronze-green.
Flowering occurs in May. The buds are ruby-red, and the flowers are purple-red, sometimes lightening to pink. The fruits are small, 1.5–2.5 cm in diameter, purple-red or dark wine-colored on long pedicels, often with pink flesh.
The species has high winter hardiness down to -34 °C, is resistant to diseases and pests, and tolerates urban conditions well. The fruits ripen in August–September, have a tart, sour taste, and are used primarily for decorative purposes, less often for processing.
