The variety originates from Spain, from where it was introduced to California in the 19th century. The tree reaches 6–9 meters in height and width with a moderate growth rate. Fruits are large, oval, and change color from bright green to dark purple or black during ripening.
The plant possesses high drought resistance and is capable of withstanding temperature drops down to -6°C. Due to difficulties with rooting, the variety is more often propagated by grafting onto rootstocks. An important feature of agricultural practice is susceptibility to Verticillium wilt, which requires careful selection of rootstock.
