The cultivar is a male plant selected within the University of California breeding program from a population of seedlings. The main purpose of the cultivar is the production of a large quantity of viable pollen for commercial orchards, especially in combination with the female Kerman cultivar.
The main advantage of the cultivar is its ability to bloom synchronously with Kerman even in years with a deficit of winter chilling hours, which makes it a more reliable pollinator compared to the Peters cultivar. Famoso exhibits precocity, starting to form flowers in the 3–4th year after grafting.
