COCOMERA represents a group of ancient Italian landraces of Pyrus communis. The varieties are of unknown origin and have been cultivated for centuries in the Emilia-Romagna region. Due to the lack of breeding control, the characteristics of individual trees within this group may vary.

There are two main varieties distinguished by maturity group: early (Cocomerina Precoce), maturing in late August, and late (Cocomerina Tardiva), maturing in late October – November. Trees are vigorous and productive. Fruits are small, weighing from 20 to 60 grams, and are pear-shaped or apple-shaped.

The main distinguishing feature is an intense red or pink shade of the flesh upon ripening. The flesh is sweet and aromatic, sometimes with muscat notes. Due to their small size and short shelf life, the fruits are primarily used for making jams, preserves, syrups, and liqueurs.
