The variety is an interspecific hybrid of Vitis berlandieri Planch. × Vitis riparia Michx. It is used exclusively as a rootstock for European Vitis vinifera grape varieties, providing them with resistance to phylloxera vastatrix and promoting early ripening of the scion vine.

The plant is characterized by very vigorous shoot growth of up to 4–5 meters and a male flower type. The variety tolerates calcareous soils with an active lime content of up to 17–20%, possesses drought tolerance and bud frost resistance down to -30°C, but adapts poorly to heavy and waterlogged soils.

This rootstock is characterized by high resistance to fungal diseases and certain types of nematodes, as well as moderate resistance to the leaf form of phylloxera. There are many clones of this variety maintained by various breeding institutes.
