The name historically indicates a supposed Greek origin; however, most varieties included in this group are South Italian autochthons. These include various plants such as the Calabrian Guardavalle, the variety for the production of Greco di Tufo in Campania, or the Umbrian Grechetto.

The group's varieties are generally mid-to-late maturing and are well-adapted to drought conditions. The clusters are predominantly medium-sized, cylindrical-conical in shape, with round or oval berries with thick skin. The varieties have an exclusively industrial use.

The grapes are used to produce dry wines with mineral and citrus notes, as well as dessert wines from dried grapes. Due to the thick skin and phenolic content, the wines possess good structure, pronounced acidity, and aging potential.
