The variety is vigorous and has an upright shoot growth habit. The bunches are large, compact, and conical, often with wings. The berries are medium-sized, with thick skins and high juice yield.

The plant possesses high endurance and adaptability to dry, stony soils and is resistant to strong winds. Due to the compactness of the bunches, the variety is susceptible to downy mildew and grey mold, therefore requiring moisture control. Regulating pruning is necessary to maintain harvest quality.

Wines made from Grenache are characterized by high alcohol levels, soft tannins, and a predominance of fruit aromas such as strawberry, raspberry, cherry, and plum. During aging, notes of leather and tobacco emerge in the wine. The variety is frequently used in blends, including the classic Rhone GSM blend.
