The variety is the result of a natural crossing of Traminer and Österreichisch Weiß varieties. The plant is characterized by rounded, slightly or moderately dissected leaves. The clusters are small or medium, cylindrical or cylindrical-conical, often dense. The berries are medium-sized, round in shape, colored from greenish-yellow to light green, with firm skin.

Grüner Silvaner is a mid-season variety and is characterized by stable yields. The variety is sensitive to winter frosts and is susceptible to fungal diseases such as downy mildew, powdery mildew, and Botrytis. It is demanding in terms of soil and develops best on deep, fertile sites with a sufficient level of moisture.

The purpose of the variety is the production of white wines possessing a harmonious taste, fine or moderately high acidity, and a pronounced ability to convey the characteristics of the terroir. The aromatic profile of the wines is dominated by notes of green apple, pear, peach, as well as herbaceous and mineral nuances.
