The variety is the result of a natural cross between Traminer (Savagnin) and St. Georgen. The plant has five-lobed, deeply incised leaves and small green-yellow berries. Gruner Veltliner is valued for its stable yield, but is susceptible to gray mold and fungal diseases, which requires ensuring good ventilation and positioning on slopes.

The grapes are intended exclusively for winemaking, including the production of dry, sparkling, and dessert wines. A long, warm, and dry autumn is necessary for the full ripening of the variety. The flavor and aroma profile of the wines is characterized by freshness, tones of green apple, pear, citrus, freshly cut grass, and a specific nuance of white pepper.
