The Meslier Saint-François variety is a natural hybrid of the Gouais blanc and Chenin blanc varieties. It is a mid-late ripening wine grape variety, traditionally used for the production of white wines and brandy, which is sensitive to grey mold and Botrytis and produces wines with low alcohol content.

In a number of classifications, the name Gros Meslier is also applied to the Folle Blanche variety. It is a late-ripening variety with high acidity, which is valued in the production of Cognac and Armagnac spirits, but possesses high susceptibility to fungal diseases.

Due to historical confusion in regional names, it is important to distinguish between these varieties when selecting planting material, as they possess different biological characteristics.
