Mescle is a traditional name under which old grape varieties are referred to in the Ain and Isère departments. Most often, this term is associated with the Mècle noir variety, which is considered a close relative of the Persan noir variety.

The Mècle noir variety is characterized by vigorous growth and a semi-upright habit of the vine. The clusters are medium to large in size, cylindrical-conical in shape, and have high density. The berries are medium, ellipsoid, dark blue in color with thin skin. The ripening period belongs to the second epoch.

The variety shows sensitivity to grey mold. The wine produced from it is dense, deep bright red in color, with high tannin content, good acidity, and aging potential. The aroma is dominated by notes of black fruits, such as cherry, raspberry, and blackberry.
