Aspiran gris originates from the Languedoc region of France and is considered a very ancient variety with a history dating back to the Gallo-Roman era. It is a mutation of the Aspiran noir variety, from which it differs primarily in the color of the berry skin at maturity.

The variety is used primarily for winemaking, and less frequently as a table grape. The plant is characterized by sensitivity to frost and low resistance to fungal diseases such as downy mildew, powdery mildew, and gray mold.

Currently, the variety has extremely limited distribution, as its acreage significantly declined following the phylloxera epidemic in the 19th century and the severe frosts of 1956.
